China’s 358 million take-away users generate a lot of garbage

In China, the takeaway industry is becoming more and more popular. As of now, China has 358 million takeaway users. Especially in big cities where life is very fast, white-collar workers who are unable to attend meals because of busy work are everywhere. At this time, the takeaway shows its convenience. You only need to simply choose what you want to eat directly in your mobile phone. Usually, the food will be delivered to you in about half an hour.

However, while the takeaway provides us with convenience, it also produces a large amount of urban waste. There are often multiple disposable lunch boxes and cutlery in each takeaway. Considering China's huge take-away user base, and many of them use takeaway service many times a day, this will bring countless tableware waste. More unfortunately, the vast majority of these wastes are non-degradable plastic waste. One of the most effective ways to handle this waste plastic is pyrolysis.

According to the person in charge of a company specializing in garbage collection and sorting in Beijing, they take up at least 40% of the garbage collected from office buildings, and the volume can reach 60%-70%.

With the Chinese government promulgating a new waste disposal policy, various government departments have strengthened supervision over the waste generated from takeaway. This also directly affects the entire take-away industry in China. More restaurants began to use more environmentally friendly tableware, and customers began to pay attention to avoiding the use of plastic tableware packaging for takeaway.

The take-away platform also added the option "Do you need tableware" in their own app. But at the moment it seems that the effect is not good, because every meal, the restaurant will be very intensive to receive take-out orders. At this time, the restaurant did not have time to carefully check whether each customer chose the tableware.

Some high-priced takeaways, such as sea cucumbers, abalone, etc., use glass cutlery or kraft paper cutlery. This looks better and is more environmentally friendly. However, many customers believe that such packaging is better, but the price of takeaway is also significantly higher.

China's Mainstream 3 Big Take-out Platforms

It seems that at this stage, there is no good solution for takeaway tableware. However, there is still room for efforts on all sides of the take-away industrial chain. On the one hand, the take-out platform can carry out more stringent environmental control, including feedback on the environmental performance of the restaurant, such as whether or not to send tableware on demand, as a ranking indicator of the restaurant, guiding businesses and consumers to choose a more environmentally friendly way of eating; on the other hand, government departments need to increase research on environmentally friendly tableware and adopt more stringent regulatory measures. In this way, restaurants can use cheaper environmentally friendly tableware and urge people to develop a good environmental awareness.

Although the disposal of take-away waste is currently a problem in China, as Shanghai first implements waste sorting in China, the recycling and reuse of take-away waste will receive more attention and is expected to be resolved in the near future.
